Day 1: Airport–Negombo

A warm Welcome to Sri Lanka!

A representative of Coconut Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your first stop on your Sri Lankan adventure – Negombo. You will be accommodated in a nice beach side hotel where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the tropical sandy beach or take an evening city tour. The first night will be spent in Negombo.

Day 2: Negombo–Anuradhapura

After an early breakfast we will leave for Anuradhapura via Puttalam. Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sri Lankan civilization from the 4th Century BC. It’s also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will tour the ancient capital and visit Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest historically documented tree in the world. In the afternoon we will visit Mihintale, which is called the “Cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka”. Mihintale is the World’s first declared sanctuary from 247 B.C. and continues to be one up to this day. We will stay overnight in Anuradhapura.

Day 3: Anuradhapura–Polonnaruwa

On the third day we will start our journey in the early morning. Our destination is Polonnaruwa. The second Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka. We will visit the Royal Pavilion, Thuparamaya, Watadagaya (circular stupa), Uththararamaya (Galvehare) where the reclining Buddha statue is and so much more. In the evening we will visit a Wood carving Factory. Overnight stay in Polonnaruwa.

Day 4: Polonnaruwa–Sigiriya–Kaudulla National Park

In the early morning we will drive to Sigiriya and climb the Sigiriya rock. The sight is a 650 feet high rock fortress, a masterpiece of construction, artistry & irrigation. The world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon we will go on a jeep safari through the Kaudulla National Park, looking for elephants, deer, peacocks, boars, and many kinds of birds. Overnight stay at Sigiriya.

Day 5: Sigiriya–Dambulla–Kandy

After breakfast we will leave for Dambulla cave temple. The Golden Rock in Dambulla is a cave temple which dates back to the 1st Century BC. Its rock ceiling is one large sweep of colorful frescoes which depict Buddhist mythology and the tales of the Buddha's previous births. The caves house the largest collection of Buddha statues in one place. After the visit we will proceed to Kandy. On our way we will stop at the Herbal and Spice Garden and the Ayurveda village. In the evening a Cultural show awaits us in Kandy. We can witness the unique Kandyan dancing and drumming. After the show we will visit the DaladaMaligawa - golden roofed temple of the sacred Tooth relic of the Buddha in time to witness the ‘pooja’. We will spend the night in Kandy.

Day 6: Kandy

We will spend the day sightseeing in the picturesque hill capital of the Island: Kandy. We start our day with the visit of the elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala and take a look at the Elephant museum at Millennium Elephant Foundation (Optional - elephant ride). In the afternoon we will explore the city by itself with many interesting old temples, a historic museum, Traditional Handicraft and Gem factory and plenty of souvenir shops. We will end our day with a walk around the beautiful Kandy Lake. Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 7: Kandy–Ramboda–Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast we will head for Nuwara Eliya. On the way we will pass Ramboda, where we will stop and take a moment to admire the beautiful scenery of the amazing Ramboda waterfalls (329 ft. high). We will stop for a visit at the tea factory to see how the world's favorite drink is prepared and enjoy a cup of real Sri Lankan tea. The afternoon will be filled with sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya which resembles an old English town. An interesting lake, race track, well- kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican Church, an 18 holes golf course and so much more. A must is a visit to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, which houses an exotic collection of roses and ferns. We will spend the night in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 8: Nuwara Eliya–Horton Plains–Ella

On our fifth day we will proceed to Horton Plains National Park early in the morning, located in the Nuwara Eliya area. The coldest and windiest location in Sri Lanka consists of ecosystems such as mountain evergreen forests, grasslands, marshy lands and an aquatic ecosystem. It has an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s time for trekking! You will be able to see cloud forests and rare montane fauna which include the Endemic Rhino Horned lizard, Bear-monkey, Giant squirrels and Sambhur. We will also look for endemic birds such as yellow-eared Bulbul, Hill white-eye and Dull blue Flycatcher. We will walk through the grasslands up to the view point known as the “Worlds End”. After our Trek a train will take us from Nanuoya to Ella. The train ride in the observation compartment offers an amazing and unforgettable view of the uphill country. We will spend the night in Ella.

Day 9: Ella–Yala National Park

After breakfast it time for us to explore Ella and its surroundings. We will be able to see waterfalls and trek up the hill called “Little Adams Peak”. After the trek we will continue our way to Yala. It’s time for an amazing adventure, afternoon safari by jeep at Yala National Park. It has one of the highest densities of Leopards in world and is considered the best place in Asia to see one. Other large animals that live there and we might see are: Elephants, Sloth Bears, mugger Crocodiles, Spotted deer, sambhurs, deer, Wild Boars, Reptiles and a big diversity of birds. The safari is followed by an overnight stay in Yala. (Instead of spending the night in a guest house you have the option of sleeping in a tree house or camp in the jungle).

Day 10: Yala–Ahangama–Mirissa

After breakfast we proceed with our journey on the southern coast. Our first stop of the day is at Ahangama where we can see the stilt fisherman at work. Time for taking some amazing pictures! Mirissa is a breathtaking sandy beach that pretty much transforms your dreams and visions of a tropical paradise into an everyday reality. We will spend the rest of the day relaxing at the beach. There is an option of whale and dolphin watching by request. The night will be spend in Mirissa.

Day 11: Mirissa–Galle–Hikkaduwa

After breakfast we proceed with our journey on the southern coast. We will stop in Galle. The city is famous by its Dutch Fortress. We will take a walk around it, admire the diversity of architectural styles and climb on the wall to see the fort conquering the waves of the Indian Ocean. Our last stop of the day is Hikkaduwa, one of the most famous sea side towns on the southern coast. Hikkaduwa is ideal for coral reef watching, here we can find one of the most beautiful coral reefs in Sri Lanka and the first coral reef to be declared a marine national park. There will also be enough time to relax on the beach. The night will be spent in Hikkaduwa.

Day 12: Hikkaduwa

It’s time to rest and enjoy the amazing tropical beach with the golden sand and the high green palm trees. Who wants a king coconut and take a dip in the Indian Ocean? Or maybe grab a surfboard and ride the magnificent waves? Maybe you would like to snorkel or dive? You have the whole day to enjoy and relax. We will spend the night in Hikkaduwa.

Day 14: Hikkaduwa–Bentota

In the morning we will leave Hikkaduwa and drive up to Bentota. The small town is famous for its turtle hatcheries and we will visit one of them to see how they take care of the turtles and learn something new about the nature. The visit is followed by a Lagoon boat ride. In the afternoon we will have time to enjoy the tropical sandy beach. Most water sports are available in this area. We will spend our last night in Bentota.

Day 15: Bentota–Colombo

After breakfast our van will pick us up and we will continue our way to Colombo or the Airport. (Depending on your request you can stay in the beach area. Drop-offs at other places are also available.)
